The People Employment Programme, St. Kitts & Nevis

Description of the Experience:

This practice targets predominantly unemployed young persons and engages them in life skill and professional development training prior to facilitating their placement in paid internship positions where they could apply their skills and develop professional experience.

Activities:

  • Resource Mobilization
  • Programme Planning
  • Curriculum Development
  • Participant and Partner Mobilization
  • Training
  • Internship Placement
    Monitoring
  • Relevant Adjustments

Results:

The Primary success of this programme is the economic engagement and empowerment of almost three thousand previously unemployed citizens of St Kitts and Nevis

Challenges:

The major challenge of this programme is dealing with and reversing the lack of personal ambition and industriousness and a sense of complacency, entitlement and apparent disdain of honest work demonstrated to some degree by a number of participants.

Lessons Learned:

The success of a programme of this nature requires the support and commitment of numerous partners across sectors.

Consistent monitoring, evaluation and adjustment at all levels of implementation is ideal.
Linking participant compensation directly to their performance is ideal for encouraging high performance and re-enforce the connection between the two in the workplace.

Training as a prerequisite for each participant to earn internship positions is critical to enhancing their capacities and shape their understanding, expectation and general level of preparedness for the work experience.
